Third Blog: Animal Photography

"We take photos as a return ticket to a moment otherwise gone."

This is a quote by Katie Thurmes. She is the co-founder of Artifact Uprising which sells custom photo goods. This quote well points out the main reason people take photos. It is to capture the moment of our lives to remember it forever. Especially those who have pets in their home, they would want to leave as many photos as possible as much as they adore their precious companions. So, today in this Animal Photography blog post, I will focus more on how to take a good picture of your pets. Here are some tips for you.

1. Choose a fast shutter speed or take screenshots of a video

Animal photography is different from other types of photography as your subjects aren't likely to stay still. The most important technique to capture a moment of moving subjects is to use a fast shutter speed. The definition of shutter speed is simple. It's the speed at which the shutter of the camera closes. The faster the shutter closes, the shorter exposure it will create and take less amount of light in the camera. Therefore, if you choose a fast shutter speed, the subject will be captured in a clear manner. The below illustration well explains this.

*FYI: 1/1000 means it captures 1/1000th of a second.

However, if you take a picture with your phone, you may not have that option. In this case, I recommend you to first take a video and take screenshots of moments of your choice!

2. Zoom in

It is usually not easy to get close enough to your moving subject. Especially for wild animals who are generally wary of people, you might want to zoom in. This is actually not only safe for you but also a way to not stress out your subject.

3. Use natural light

Using natural light is always recommendable as it creates more color and contrasts. It is also more pleasing to our eyes. Try to find the right spot with good natural light and utilize its warmth to create special moods. Play with the light and shadows.

4. Get on their level

You need to match yourself physically to the eye level of your subjects. This means you may have to lay down on a floor or stand on a chair in order to get the best photo. Matching your camera lens with the subject's eye level is essential to get a good portrait photo.

5. Be patient and prepare for the right moment

Be patient. Animal photography is all about waiting in silence and giving enough time for your subject to settle. But do not just stay still. Put your finger on the camera button and prepare yourself for the right moment to come. When the moment finally comes, push that button right away!
